On the southern shore of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Ytri Tunga is one of the few beaches in Iceland where seeing wild seals is a near certainty. Harbor seals haul out on the low rock shelves just offshore, basking in unhurried groups often close enough that binoculars are optional. Grey seals appear occasionally. The beach itself stands out: golden-yellow sand rather than the black volcanic shore that covers most of Iceland's coastline. A short gravel path leads from the small parking area through low dunes to the water's edge. Low tide is when seals gather most visibly on exposed rock. Late spring through midsummer is prime — June and July when mothers nurse pups — and early morning or evening gives you the beach to yourself. The parking area has no facilities; nearest services are in Arnarstapi, about fifteen minutes east. Ytri Tunga sits right off Route 54, roughly two and a quarter hours from Reykjavík. Free, no 4x4 needed. Keep at least 50 metres from the seals and avoid sudden movements — they look placid but will abandon the rocks if disturbed.
