Why this site exists

Planning a trip to Iceland used to mean stitching together a dozen browser tabs: a forum post about which waterfall was worth the detour, a blog with outdated prices, a YouTube review of a hot spring, an official tourism page that listed everything but ranked nothing, and a Google map covered in pins with no context. By the time you finally had a route, you had spent more time researching than you would on the trip itself.

My Iceland Vacation was built to be the single resource the author wished existed when planning his own first trip around the Ring Road: every place worth visiting, in one map, with the details that actually matter — what it costs, how long to budget, whether the road is paved, what the trail difficulty is, when of year it’s actually accessible, and whether the photos online match what you find when you arrive.

The goal isn’t to list every coordinate in Iceland. It’s to be opinionated. We intentionally leave out attractions that disappoint relative to the drive, and we highlight the lesser-known places that consistently exceed expectations.

• Over 250 destinations across all regions of Iceland — waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, sea cliffs, hiking trails, geothermal areas, museums, towns, and viewpoints — each with its own unique, hand-written description.
• An interactive map that you can filter by category, region, season, and difficulty, with photos, road conditions, and 4x4 requirements clearly marked.
• Trip planning tools for building a day-by-day itinerary, saving favorites, and sharing trips with traveling companions.
• Practical context: best months to visit, typical visit duration, whether something is free, paid, kid-friendly, or wheelchair accessible, and notes on seasonal closures.

How destinations are chosen

Every destination on the site has been individually evaluated against a consistent set of criteria: is it visually distinctive, is it accessible enough to recommend to ordinary travelers, is the experience worth the time investment relative to the alternatives in the same region, and is it described accurately for what visitors actually encounter.

Where multiple sources disagree (and they often do — Iceland is changing fast), we err on the side of conservative current-state information and link out to authoritative sources for anything safety-related.

Editorial standards

• Original writing. All destination descriptions are written for this site, not aggregated, scraped, or generated as filler.
• No paid placements. We do not accept payment to include a destination, rank it higher, or write favorably about it. Where outbound links point to booking partners (hotels, tours, car rentals), those relationships do not influence which destinations appear or how they are described.
• Updates over time. Iceland’s prices, road conditions, and access change. We revise pages as conditions shift and welcome corrections from travelers who find something out of date.
• Safety first. Several entries describe places that require real caution — F-roads, sneaker-wave beaches, glacier edges, geothermal fields. We try to be honest about risk and link to SafeTravel.is and other authoritative sources rather than understate it.

Who’s behind it

My Iceland Vacation is built and maintained by a small independent team led by a developer and Iceland enthusiast who has driven the Ring Road multiple times in different seasons. The site is self-funded; revenue from advertising and affiliate links keeps the lights on so that the content can stay free for travelers.
