Víknaslóðir — the Trails of the Inlets — is a network of marked routes in the Borgarfjörður Eystri area of East Iceland, threading along sea cliffs, over mountain passes, and between deserted inlets with old farm ruins. The system runs southward from the village of Bakkagerði toward Loðmundarfjörður, with hiking lodges at Breiðavík and Húsavík where you can break a multi-day traverse. Day hikes from the village are also feasible without committing to an overnight. The drive from Egilsstaðir to Bakkagerði is about 70–75 km on Route 94, taking roughly 90 minutes. Right at the village, Hafnarhólmi harbour has a boardwalk platform with close-up views of a large puffin colony during summer. The rhyolite ridges here run in reds and golds that look distinct from the grey basalt found elsewhere in Iceland. Trails are best from late June through early September, when the high passes are clear of snow and the lodges are staffed. Locally published trail maps are available in the village. Footwear and layers matter — the terrain is rugged in places despite moderate overall grades.
