Víðgelmir Cave
Víðgelmir
West
openverse:flickrIceland's largest lava tube stretches 1,585 meters beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field, reaching up to 15.8 meters high and 16.5 meters wide. Víðgelmir formed around 900 AD when a prolonged eruption sent molten lava across the land; as the surface hardened, the liquid interior drained away, leaving this cathedral-sized passage. Viking Age artifacts found inside show early settlers knew the cave long before any modern visitor. Guided tours follow a lit walkway through the most dramatic sections, past lava stalactites, multiple floor levels from successive flows, and vivid mineral colorations on the walls. Ice formations build up deep in the cave through winter. Bring a warm layer — it stays cold underground year-round regardless of conditions above. Tours depart from a visitor center near Húsafell, roughly two hours from Reykjavík. The walkway makes this one of Iceland's more accessible underground experiences with no technical equipment needed. Book ahead in summer. Hraunfossar waterfalls and Langjökull glacier are nearby, making this a good anchor for a full day in the area.
