Vatnsnes Seals
Northwest
wikimediaThe Vatnsnes Peninsula holds Iceland's most reliable seal-watching, with both harbor seals and grey seals hauling out on rocky beaches year-round. The main viewing site at Illugastaðir has an 800-meter wheelchair-accessible path to a covered shelter with binoculars. Seals rest on the rocks during the two hours either side of low tide; at high tide you may see nothing. June and July are the best months — harbor seal pupping season brings the most animals ashore. Start in Hvammstangi, a small town at the base of the peninsula where the Icelandic Seal Centre covers seal biology and current viewing conditions. The circuit around the peninsula also passes Hvítserkur, a basalt sea stack worth the short detour. There is a small parking fee at Illugastaðir farm, which also has restrooms and a campsite. Vatnsnes is around 2.5 hours from Reykjavík — a long day trip, more comfortable as an overnight. The structured field is marked free, though the Illugastaðir parking fee applies on-site. Stay well back from the seals; binoculars or a telephoto lens serve you better than trying to close the distance.
