Þórsmörk Volcano Huts
Þórsmörk
Highlands
wikimediaRun by Volcano Trails, the Húsadalur camp in Þórsmörk sits at the junction of two of Iceland's most popular long-distance routes: the Laugavegur trail from Landmannalaugar and the Fimmvörðuháls trail from Skógar. Both pass right through the site, so the huts see a steady flow of trail-finishers, day-hikers, and people using the valley as a base. Eyjafjallajökull glacier rises above the valley to the south. Accommodation ranges from shared dorm bunks to private rooms, shepherds' cottages, and glamping tents. The LavaGrill restaurant serves hot meals, and there is a sauna and a shallow natural pool on site — welcome after a long day on trail. Camping is also available. Getting here without a high-clearance 4x4 means taking one of the scheduled bus services that ford the glacial rivers on the approach road. Roads are generally open June through September. Book well in advance — July and August weekends fill fast with Laugavegur finishers.
