Þórsmörk
South
wikimediaTucked between three glaciers — Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull — Þórsmörk is a highland valley that feels unlike anywhere else in Iceland. Where most of the country is open and wind-scoured, the ridges here trap warm air: the slopes are thick with birch scrub, wildflowers, and moss in summer, while glacial rivers wind across the valley floor below the ice-capped peaks. The name means Thor's Forest, and the vegetation earns it by Icelandic standards. Two of Iceland's most-walked multi-day routes converge here. The Laugavegur trail (roughly 55 km from Landmannalaugar) ends in the valley, and the Fimmvörðuháls trail connects south to Skógafoss. Day-hikes from the huts reach ridges with wide views of ice and volcanic terrain. Mountain huts at Húsadalur, Básar, and Langidalur serve both trail-finishers and day visitors. Access requires crossing glacial rivers on F-roads; private vehicles must be high-clearance 4x4. Scheduled highland buses from Reykjavík and Hvolsvöllur ford the rivers and are the practical choice for most visitors. The valley opens roughly late May or June and closes in September.
