Svínafellsjökull Views
South
wikimediaFew glaciers in Iceland are this accessible and this dramatic to stand next to. Svínafellsjökull is an outlet tongue of the Vatnajökull ice cap that presses between dark ridgelines into a heavily crevassed snout — fractured blue and white ice with dirt bands running through it. The free viewpoint is a short walk from a parking area off the Ring Road near Skaftafell; guided glacier walks depart from close by. The glacier has appeared in several major productions: Christopher Nolan used it as the alien ice planet in Interstellar (2014), and both Game of Thrones and Batman Begins filmed here too. The ice does look otherworldly in person, which explains the pattern. Svínafellsjökull is retreating measurably each year, and even decade-old photos show how far the snout has pulled back. No fee for the viewpoint; the access road is paved. If you want to walk on the ice, book a licensed guide in advance — solo travel onto the glacier is prohibited and the crevasses are genuinely hazardous. May through September is the most practical window.
