Dark hexagonal basalt columns hang from the lip of Svartifoss like a chandelier of stone, framing a 20-meter drop into a pool below. The columns formed when ancient lava cooled slowly and cracked into geometric shapes; erosion undercut them over time to create the dramatic overhang seen today. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson drew on these formations when designing both Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík's landmark church, and the National Theatre — the geology here has quietly shaped Iceland's built landscape. The trail from Skaftafell visitor centre is 1.5 kilometers each way with about 140 meters of elevation gain through birch and rowan woodland. On the way up you pass two smaller falls — Hundafoss and Magnúsarfoss. The return trip takes around 90 minutes. The path can be slippery in wet conditions; waterproof boots are worth bringing year-round. The Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park has a visitor centre, café, and campsite near the trailhead. The trail continues past Svartifoss to the Sjónarsker viewpoint for broader views over the glacier and surrounding ridges.
