Súgandisey Island
Súgandisey
Snæfellsnes
wikimediaA short causeway from Stykkishólmur's harbour connects the town to Súgandisey, a small basalt island topped by an orange cylindrical lighthouse relocated here from Grótta in Seltjarnarnes. From the top you get a full panorama: the colourful houses and distinctive church of Stykkishólmur below, and beyond them Breiðafjörður scattered with its many islands stretching toward the Westfjords. The island also shelters the harbour from northerly winds. The walk from the causeway car park to the lighthouse takes under ten minutes, with stone stairs climbing the cliff and benches at the higher levels for watching the light change over the water. The path can be slippery in winter. Nesting seabirds occupy the rock ledges in summer. Súgandisey is free, open at any hour, and takes around 30–45 minutes. It pairs well with a walk around Stykkishólmur itself or a meal before the Baldur ferry crossing to the Westfjords.
