Every six to ten minutes, Strokkur's pool swells into a glassy blue dome and fires boiling water 15 to 20 metres into the air — occasionally higher. The buildup is part of the show: the surface lifts visibly before the eruption, giving just enough warning to raise a camera. The event lasts a few seconds, then the pool refills. Most visitors catch three or four eruptions in the time they spend here. Strokkur sits in the Haukadalur geothermal valley alongside the original Geysir, which gave its name to the English word but now erupts only after earthquakes. The surrounding field has colourful hot spring pools, fumaroles, and mud pots worth a slow circuit. Stay on the marked paths; the crust over hot ground is thinner than it looks, and spray can reach bystanders when the eruption leans downwind. No entrance fee, but this is a core Golden Circle stop with heavy daily traffic. Arriving before 9 am or after 6 pm cuts crowds. The site sits about 100 kilometres east of Reykjavík on Route 35, roughly 90 minutes' drive.
