Stórurð sits at over 400 meters elevation in the Dyrfjöll mountains above Borgarfjörður Eystri, and getting there takes genuine effort — the hike from the Vatnsskarð trailhead on Road 94 covers around 13 kilometers round trip with roughly 680 meters of total elevation change, and the terrain is rocky and uneven for stretches. Most hikers budget three and a half to four and a half hours for the full outing. The reward is a landscape that looks almost accidental: enormous boulders, some the size of houses, left behind when glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, now scattered around small turquoise-green pools edged with vivid moss. The color contrast between the dark rock, the moss, and the water is striking under any light. The trailhead at Vatnsskarð pass sits about 20 minutes from Borgarfjörður Eystri village along Route 94, which itself is about an hour north of Egilsstaðir. Free parking is available at the trailhead. There is no public transport — a rental car is required. Several marked trails approach from different directions; the Vatnsskarð route is the most commonly used. Snow can linger into July at this elevation, and some sources note it can appear even in August. Mid-July through early September is the most reliable window. The village of Borgarfjörður Eystri is also known for accessible puffin-watching in summer, so combining the two makes a strong day in the East Fjords.
