Black sand, wild marram grass, and Vestrahorn rising 454 meters from the shoreline make Stokksnes one of the most photographed spots on Iceland's southeast coast. Tidal pools form at low tide and mirror the mountain cleanly; the light at either end of the day turns the dark peaks dramatic shades of orange and pink. Access runs through a private gate where you pay a small entry fee at the Viking Café. A cluster of turf-roofed structures — built as a film set that was abandoned before production began — sits on the property and adds an atmospheric detour. The beach stretches far enough that spreading out is easy even when others are present. Stokksnes is just off Route 1 near Höfn, about five to six hours east of Reykjavík. The gravel access road is straightforward in dry conditions; a standard car is fine outside of winter. Come at low tide for the reflections, and at sunrise or sunset for the best light on Vestrahorn.
