Skaftafell Campsite
Tjaldsvæði Skaftafells
Southeast
wikimediaThe campground at Skaftafell is one of Iceland's largest, spread across eight pitch zones inside Vatnajökull National Park with room for around 400 tents and direct views toward the glacier tongues. Open year-round, though only zones A and C run in winter; outdoor water taps come on in mid-May. Facilities are solid for a national park campground: flush toilets, hot showers, laundry machines, electrical hookups (around 100 outlets), dish-washing stations, and WiFi across the site. There is no indoor kitchen or dining hall for campers, though a privately operated restaurant operates on-site seasonally. Walk-in campers cannot pre-book; you register and pay at the reception on arrival. Groups can reserve in advance. Peak summer fills the site quickly. The location is the real draw. Trails to Svartifoss waterfall and the glacier viewpoints begin steps from the pitches, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is around 50 km east along the Ring Road. The campsite sits off the Ring Road; the access road is paved and no four-wheel drive is needed.
