Three restored harbour buildings house Iceland's largest maritime museum, each dedicated to a different chapter of the herring industry that made Siglufjörður briefly one of the country's wealthiest towns. Róaldsbrakki, a Norwegian salting station from 1907, covers processing methods and the seasonal workers who flooded the docks each summer. Grána documents the rendering of herring into fishmeal and oil. The Boathouse, opened in 2004, recreates the harbour with old fishing vessels and period equipment. Herring represented a striking share of Iceland's total export income at the industry's peak in the 1950s. The boom collapsed in the late 1960s when stocks failed. Original machinery, reconstructed workspaces, and audiovisual material carry the story directly. The museum won the Micheletti Prize in 2004 for Europe's best new museum of industry and technology. Allow at least an hour; the buildings are spread along the waterfront. Opening hours vary by season, so check ahead in winter. Siglufjörður is roughly 90 minutes from Akureyri via the Héðinsfjörður tunnel.
