Settlement Museum
West
wikimediaThe Settlement Center in Borgarnes occupies two of the town's oldest buildings — a merchant's house from 1877 and a warehouse from 1889 — and runs two exhibitions side by side. The first covers Iceland's settlement era, tracing how Norse migrants arrived in the 9th century and built a society from scratch. The second follows Egil Skalla-Grímsson, the complex poet-warrior at the heart of Egils Saga. Both use audio guides available in 15 languages, and the production quality is high — this is not a dusty display-case museum. The center sits on the Borgarnes waterfront at Brákarbraut, about an hour north of Reykjavík on the Ring Road. Budget 60–90 minutes for both exhibitions. There is a well-regarded restaurant on site for lunch. Borgarnes is often bypassed on the drive to Snæfellsnes or the Westfjords, which makes this a genuinely useful stop: the saga material connects directly to sites along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Tickets cover both exhibitions and the audio guide.
