Selfoss Service Hub
South
wikimediaSelfoss is the commercial backbone of South Iceland — a real town of around 8,000–9,000 people rather than a curated tourist stop. At the junction of Route 1 and Route 35, about 50 kilometers southeast of Reykjavík, it makes a practical overnight base at prices noticeably lower than the capital. Supermarkets (Krónan, Bónus), fuel stations, a hospital, a cinema, and a well-equipped swimming pool all sit within a compact center. The Bobby Fischer Center on Austurvegur 21 holds original scoresheets and memorabilia from the 1972 World Chess Championship, open afternoons from May to October. Fischer died in Iceland in 2008 and is buried at the Laugardælir church just outside town. The Ölfusá riverbank offers easy walking, and the old town area near Tryggvaskáli has historical flood markers from three major twentieth-century floods. Day trips cover Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, and the South Coast waterfalls comfortably. The Westman Islands ferry at Landeyjahöfn is about 45 minutes away. Everything is on paved roads and fully operational year-round.
