About 45 kilometers southeast of Reykjavík, on the edge of Hveragerði, a trail climbs into a geothermally active valley where a warm river runs between grassy banks — open to anyone, free to bathe. The round trip to the bathing area is roughly six to seven kilometers with around 300 meters of elevation gain, taking most people 45 to 75 minutes to reach the top. Along the way, steaming vents and a small waterfall (Djúpagilsfoss) drop into a canyon on the left side of the valley. The hot river is fed by upstream springs and diluted by cold mountain water; move up or downstream to find the temperature that suits you. Wooden privacy screens line the bathing area — enough for modesty but not enclosed. Bring a swimsuit and towel in a waterproof bag. The trail gets muddy after rain and icy in winter. Parking at the trailhead north of Hveragerði charges a fee via app (around 1,000 ISK for five hours). The bath itself is free. Weekday mornings are quieter; weekend afternoons draw crowds.
