Perlan sits on Öskjuhlíð hill in Reykjavík, its glass dome resting on six cylindrical hot-water storage tanks that still supply the city. It has been converted into a nature museum called Wonders of Iceland, and the centrepiece is a roughly hundred-metre-long artificial ice cave built from snow gathered in Icelandic mountains — genuinely cold and dark, and a worthwhile stand-in if a glacier walk is not on your schedule. The Áróra planetarium runs an immersive 8K film about the northern lights, and the other galleries cover volcanoes (with footage from the 2021 Geldingadalir eruption), glaciers, birdlife, and the water cycle. A free 360-degree observation deck wraps around the outside of the dome and gives a clean view over Reykjavík, the bay, and the mountains — worth going up even without a museum ticket. A café and restaurant are also on site. Budget around two hours for the full museum. Perlan is about fifteen minutes from the city centre by car or taxi, with buses nearby. Open year-round, but tour groups fill it mid-morning — arriving at opening or late afternoon is easier.
