Patreksfjörður Birds
Westfjords
wikimediaPatreksfjörður, population around 700, is the main service hub for the southwestern Westfjords — the place to refuel, stock groceries, and sleep before tackling the roads to Látrabjarg and Rauðisandur. Látrabjarg, Iceland's largest seabird cliff at over 440 meters high and 14 kilometers long, lies about 60 kilometers west on a mixed paved-and-gravel route. Rauðisandur's red-sand beach is a similar distance south. Two nights here is sensible. The town sits on the southern shore of its namesake fjord, with steep hillsides behind it. There's a swimming pool, supermarket, fuel, and varied accommodation. A small museum covers local history, and the harbor keeps a working fishing character. The Baldur car ferry departs from Brjánslækur — about 45 minutes northeast — and crosses Breiðafjörður bay to Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, stopping at Flatey island. The crossing takes roughly 2.5 hours and carries vehicles, offering a practical exit without retracing the long drive in. Seabird season at Látrabjarg runs May through August.
