Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach
Nauthólsvík
Reykjavik Area
wikimediaGeothermal hot water is pumped into a sheltered bay here, raising the lagoon temperature from the ocean's natural 4–6°C to around 15–19°C in summer. A large hot tub maintained at roughly 38°C sits in front of the service building for those who want a proper soak. The beach is a genuine local hangout — on a warm afternoon you will find Reykjavík residents sunbathing and grilling alongside children in the shallow water. The beach opened in 2000 and features imported light-coloured sand, changing rooms, showers, and a small café. Admission is 1,500 ISK for adults and 400 ISK for children aged 10–17; younger children enter free. The full beach season with the heated lagoon runs roughly mid-May through mid-August, though facilities including the hot tub operate year-round. To get there, drive south along the coast from the city centre — the beach sits below Perlan and is signposted off Nauthólsvegur, facing Faxaflói bay with views toward Mount Esja. The hot tub draws regulars even in January.
