Námaskarð

The ground at Námaskarð is actively cooking: grey mud pools churn and splatter, fumaroles hiss jets of steam, and the flat terrain is stained vivid shades of yellow, orange, and ochre from sulfur deposits. The smell of hydrogen sulfide hits before you reach the car park. This is the Hverarönd geothermal field on the eastern flank of Mount Námafjall, right beside the Ring Road roughly 4 miles east of Lake Mývatn — no detour needed. Marked gravel paths guide visitors through the active area and should be followed carefully. The surface looks firm in places where it is not — ground near mud pools and fumaroles can be unstable. No café or visitor centre here; facilities are limited to paid toilets and a car park. Entry is free. In winter, steam columns rising against snow make the place feel particularly surreal. In summer, the colour contrasts photograph well in early morning or evening light. Budget around 30–45 minutes for a thorough walk of the marked paths.
