Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost inhabited place on the Icelandic mainland, about 187 km southeast of Reykjavík, and the N1 here is the main service anchor for the village. Fuel pumps run around the clock via card; the attached shop is open daily with hot food and coffee, roughly morning to early evening. ATM and toilets are on-site. The station is right in the middle of the action. Reynisfjara black-sand beach — with its basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore — is a five-minute drive west. The sea there is known for unpredictable waves that have injured and killed visitors; the warning signs at the beach should be taken seriously. Mýrdalsjökull glacier sits about 20 km north with Katla volcano beneath it, an active system under ongoing monitoring. Westward from Vík, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss are within reasonable distance. Heading east the road grows remote quickly, with the next reliable fuel a long way off — fill up here before continuing in that direction.
