Sitting just off Route 1 about 45 km southeast of Reykjavík, the N1 in Hveragerði is often the first proper service stop when heading toward the South Coast. It covers the basics reliably: fuel, a convenience store, hot food, coffee, toilets, and an ATM. Hours run roughly 7:30 to 19:30 on weekdays and 9:00 to 19:30 on weekends, though these can shift seasonally. Hveragerði sits directly above a geothermal field — hot springs bubble up in greenhouses and the central park — and the trailhead for the Reykjadalur hot-river hike starts at the edge of town. That trail is about 3 km each way to a natural bathing river, making a round trip of two to three hours; the walk is free, with a small parking fee at the trailhead. For travellers on the Ring Road, this station marks the point where services begin to thin. It is the last reliable stop before the longer stretch toward Selfoss and Hella, and worth a top-up if you are pushing straight toward the black-sand coast.
