Mývatn Nature Baths
Jarðböðin við Mývatn
North
unsplashThe facility now called Earth Lagoon — rebranded from Mývatn Nature Baths in late 2025 — draws geothermal water from around 2,500 meters underground and holds it in a large open-air lagoon at 36–40°C year-round. The water is alkaline and mineral-rich, producing a milky blue-grey tint, but the backdrop is genuinely volcanic: the Námafjall ridge and Mývatn lava fields stretch out on all sides, and crowds are a fraction of what you find in the south. Geothermal steam baths complement the main lagoon. The baths sit in North Iceland's most active geological corridor — Dimmuborgir, Námakarð, and the Krafla crater are all within 20 minutes by car — making them a natural anchor for a full day. An on-site bistro serves food with views over the lava field. Advance booking is recommended in July and August; walk-ins are usually fine the rest of the year. The site closed in early 2026 for renovation and expansion under the Earth Lagoon rebrand, with a planned reopening in summer 2026. Check the official website for current status and pricing before visiting, as both will change with the reopening.
