Lýsuhólslaug
Snæfellsnes
wikimediaThe pool at Lýsuhólslaug gets its colour from Chlorella algae in the mineral-rich spring water, giving it a murky green tint unlike any other swimming pool in Iceland. No chlorine is added; the water is drained and refilled regularly. The spring is naturally heated to around 37–39°C and contains calcium, magnesium, and carbonates. The pool sits on a working farm on the southern Snæfellsnes coast, with views toward the interior mountains. The facility is simple: changing rooms, showers, a main pool, and hot tubs. It dates to the 1940s when the farm owner built a pool around the spring. The rural setting and unusual water colour make it a quieter alternative to the region's busier tourist pools. The pool is seasonal — typically open June through mid-August, 11:00 to 21:00 daily. Dates can vary by year, so confirm before making the drive. The farm is reached via a gravel side road off Route 54, roughly halfway along the southern coast of the peninsula from Borgarnes. A small admission fee is charged at the gate.
