Puffins nest on the small islands of Lundey and Akurey in Faxaflói Bay, just fifteen minutes by boat from Reykjavík's Old Harbour. Boats circle the islands without landing (the colonies are protected), but approach close enough for good photographs of puffins on the grassy clifftops. Guillemots, fulmars, and Arctic terns are also regularly seen. An English-speaking guide on board describes the birds and the bay. Tours run from around late April through mid-August; outside those months there are no birds. Departure is from the Old Harbour, a short walk from the city centre — no rental car needed. Tours last about an hour. Several operators run departures throughout the day in summer, with evening slots offering softer light. Booking ahead is wise in late June and July. If your itinerary is centred on Reykjavík and you want puffins without committing a full day, this is the practical option. The birds are the same Atlantic puffins found at remote colonies, just far more conveniently placed.
