Rye bread baked underground in hot sand is the thing most visitors remember about Laugarvatn Fontana — bakers bury sealed pots of rye dough about 30 cm deep in 100°C volcanic sand, where it bakes for 24 hours, and the demo ends with warm slices beside the lake. The spa sits on the shore of Lake Laugarvatn, about an hour and a quarter from Reykjavík on the Golden Circle, and that lakeside position is what separates it from most Icelandic thermal pools. The contrast between hot baths and a quick swim in the cold lake is genuinely bracing. The facility has three steam rooms built over separate geothermal vents, three outdoor mineral pools, and a Finnish sauna. The steam rooms sit nearly at ground level and have a raw, damp quality that more polished spas have engineered away. Plan for at least two hours; advance booking in summer is strongly recommended. The original bathing facility dates to 1929 and the current building opened in 2011; the baths were then closed for a major renovation through late 2025 and reopened in mid-2026 with expanded pools and a new panoramic sauna. Bread-baking demos run daily year-round (typically 11:45 and 14:30, with an extra morning slot in summer). Check fontana.is for current hours before visiting.
