Laugafell Hot Springs
Laugafell
Highlands
wikimediaLaugafell sits on the high plateau of Iceland's northern interior, about 15 kilometers northeast of Hofsjökull glacier and roughly 85 kilometers south of Akureyri by F-road. The draw is a man-made hot spring pool fed by the geothermal area here, maintained at around 38°C in summer, with a wooden walkway down to the water and changing facilities alongside. Soaking out here, with highland desert in every direction and Hofsjökull on the horizon, is nothing like the polished pools near Reykjavík. Access requires a high-clearance 4x4. From Akureyri take F821 (Eyjafjarðarleið) south, then connect via F752; from the Sprengisandur direction, turn west off F26. Roads are typically passable early July through mid-September — check road.is before going. The Akureyri Touring Club hut sleeps around 32 guests across two geothermally heated buildings; camping is also available. A warden is on-site through summer. Reservations at ffa.is. Hiking trails and several waterfalls surround the mountain, and an overnight stay lets you explore the plateau properly. Budget at least three hours for a day visit.
