The world's largest man-made ice tunnel bores roughly 500 meters into Langjökull, Iceland's second-biggest glacier, at a consistent 0°C. At about 3.5 meters wide and 3 meters tall, the passage is easy to walk, and the ice overhead — up to 30 meters of it — glows in natural blue tones where the lighting catches the compressed layers. The glacier holds ice that fell as snow over a thousand years ago. The tunnel opened in 2015 and remains the only year-round accessible ice tunnel of its kind. Tours depart from Húsafell in West Iceland, about two and a half hours from Reykjavík. Specially modified multi-axle glacier trucks carry the group up onto the ice cap — roughly 30 minutes each way in summer, longer in winter. Guided time inside runs about an hour, with stops at chambers and points covering glaciology and climate. Total tour time is three to four hours. Book through intotheglacier.is; prices start around 25,000 ISK per adult. Wear multiple warm layers regardless of season — the tunnel stays at freezing year-round. The tour suits almost any fitness level including children.
