Langanes is a 45-kilometre finger of land pointing northeast from Iceland's coast, and the further you drive the less it feels like anywhere else. Sealed road gives way to gravel, gravel thins to a rough track, and at Fontur — the very tip — the Langanesviti lighthouse (first built in 1910) stands with open ocean in three directions. No entry fees, no crowds, poor mobile coverage: bring fuel, food, and water from Þórshöfn. The main summer draw is birdlife. Skoruvíkurbjarg cliffs hold one of the world's largest gannet colonies, centred on Stóri Karl, a rock column offshore. A purpose-built clifftop platform gives a direct sightline to the nesting birds. Puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes pack the same cliffs from May through June. The interior holds ruins of abandoned settlements, including Skálar, a fishing community that supported over a hundred people in the early 1900s before being abandoned by 1946. Road 869 is gravel throughout, passable by a regular car in dry summer conditions, though rougher sections near Fontur suit a 4x4. Allow four hours for the round trip.
