A geothermal stream pushes up at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field and mixes with cold snowmelt, creating a natural pool sitting between 36 and 40°C. The hot spring is free; you wade in from the rocks and look up at rhyolite mountains striped in yellow, green, and deep red. The lava field formed after an eruption in 1477 and is worth an hour of wandering. Landmannalaugar marks the northern start of the 54-kilometre Laugavegur trail south to Þórsmörk. Day hikers can tackle Bláhnúkur (943 metres, around 2–3 hours) or a circuit of Brennisteinsalda. A full day is the minimum; many people stay two or three nights at the campsite or mountain hut run by the Iceland Touring Association, which books up fast in July and August. Access requires a 4x4 on mountain roads F208 or F225, open roughly mid-June to mid-September; driving from Reykjavík takes four to five hours. Highland buses run from Reykjavík and Hella during summer. Parking now uses a reservation system with limited daily slots — check requirements before setting out.
