Kvernufoss
South
wikimediaKvernufoss drops roughly 30 to 40 meters into a narrow black basalt canyon a short walk from the Skógar Museum — the same car park that serves the far more visited Skógafoss. The falls draw meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull via the Kvernuhólsá river. When conditions allow (generally late spring through autumn), you can walk behind the curtain of water and look down the Kvernugil canyon — a close, wet experience that demands waterproof gear and sturdy shoes. The walk from the museum car park takes 15 to 20 minutes along a path that rises gradually through the gorge. The trail is easy to start but narrows and gets muddy near the base, and the spray soaks anything in range. On sunny days a rainbow often forms in the mist. Budget around 45 minutes total for the round trip with time at the falls. Because Kvernufoss shares parking with Skógafoss, the detour costs nothing extra in logistics. But most visitors park, head straight for Skógafoss, and miss the sign pointing the other way. Come early or late in the day if you want the canyon to yourself.
