Kirkjufellsfoss
West
wikimediaKirkjufellsfoss is a series of cascades dropping around 16 meters on the small river at the foot of Kirkjufell mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The falls themselves are modest, but the composition — cascades in the foreground, Kirkjufell's distinctive 463-meter peak rising directly behind — has made this one of Iceland's most photographed spots, a status sealed by the mountain's appearance in Game of Thrones. The car park is right off Route 54, a few minutes west of Grundarfjörður, and a short flat path reaches the river in under five minutes. The rocks near the water can be slippery, but the site is otherwise very easy. There is no entry fee. Early morning and winter visits tend to produce the best conditions: fewer people, better light, and in winter a chance of snow on the mountain or Northern Lights overhead. Budget 30–45 minutes for a standard visit. If you're photographing seriously — waiting for the right light, trying different foreground angles — you could easily spend considerably longer.
