Snæfellsnes

Kirkjufell is a 463-meter peak on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula whose steeply curved profile makes it one of Iceland's most recognizable mountains. Formed as a nunatak — a summit that protruded above the ice sheet during glaciation — it became internationally famous as "Arrowhead Mountain" after featuring in Game of Thrones seasons 6 and 7. Its name means "Church Mountain," a nod to the steeple-like silhouette. The classic vantage point is across the road at Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, where the small cascade frames the mountain behind it. The car park sits a few minutes west of Grundarfjörður on Route 54; the walk to the viewpoint takes only minutes. Come before mid-morning or in the evening to avoid tour buses. Climbing Kirkjufell is possible but genuinely dangerous: the upper sections are steep, loose, and exposed, and fatal accidents have occurred. Without a guide and solid hillwalking experience, don't attempt it. Most visitors spend around an hour photographing from the base, which is a completely satisfying way to experience the mountain.
