Hverfjall is a near-perfect circle of black tephra rising about 420 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of Lake Mývatn, its rim so symmetrical it looks almost engineered. The crater formed around 2,500 years ago when rising magma hit groundwater and detonated, flinging volcanic fragments outward. The result is a roughly one-kilometre-wide bowl dropping around 140 metres to a flat floor of grey cinder. Two marked paths reach the rim: a steeper southern route (around 20 to 30 minutes) and a gentler northern trail. Once on top, a trail circles the crater in about 3.5 km, alternating views of the Mývatn lake district to the west and open volcanic terrain to the east. The tephra surface erodes easily — stay on marked paths; shortcuts have left visible scarring. Hverfjall sits just off Road 848 near Mývatn, close to Dimmuborgir's lava formations, so most visitors combine both in a half-day loop. The site is free and draws sizeable crowds in July and August; summer mornings are the quietest. Winter access is possible but the path can be icy.
