Hveravellir Highland
Highland
wikimediaThe Kjölur highland road (F35) cuts between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, and roughly halfway along it sits Hveravellir — a geothermal field where turquoise pools steam against a backdrop of black sand and distant ice caps. The centrepiece is a blue bathing pool at a comfortable temperature, surrounded by hot springs, fumaroles, and silica formations. A small fee applies to use the pool; the geothermal area is free to walk through. The place has been a waystation since the saga age. Fjalla-Eyvindur, an 18th-century outlaw, survived several highland winters here using the geothermal warmth, and the ruins of his shelter are still visible among the springs. A Touring Association hut provides basic bunk accommodation and meals in summer. F35 is an F-road, open only in summer — typically from around mid-June — and requires appropriate clearance; check road.is before departing. The drive from Reykjavík is roughly four to five hours. Budget at least an hour on site, longer if you plan to soak; the landscape between two glaciers tends to hold you longer than planned.
