The Icelandic Seal Center sits on the harbor in Hvammstangi, a small town just off Route 1 on the Vatnsnes Peninsula. A non-profit museum and research facility operating since 2005, it focuses on Iceland's two resident seal species — harbor seals and grey seals — plus the coastal wildlife found along these shores. Exhibits cover biology, behavior, the history of seal hunting, and conservation. The center also serves as the local tourist information office, and staff can advise on where seals are hauling out on any given day — Illugastaðir and Ósar are the main viewing spots on the peninsula. The museum is small; most visitors move through in 20–30 minutes. The real value is the practical intelligence it offers before you head out: where to park, how close to get, how to watch without disturbing the animals. Opening hours shift seasonally — longer hours from May through September, shorter weekday-only hours in winter. The center sits about 6 km off the Ring Road, roughly halfway between Reykjavík and Akureyri, and makes an easy stop on any ring-road itinerary.
