Hofsós opened its geothermal pool on the edge of Skagafjörður fjord in 2010, and the design is quietly clever: the infinity edge aligns the water's surface with the fjord, so when you're floating in the 30°C water your eye line meets the open sea directly and Drangey island rises from it like a sentinel. The main pool is 25 by 10.5 meters with a hotter tub alongside. This is a municipal pool, not a spa — modest facilities, honest prices — and that's exactly what makes it work. Getting here requires a car; public transport to Hofsós is sparse. From Akureyri it's roughly 1.5 to 2 hours along the Tröllaskagi peninsula on Road 76. Summer hours run from early morning until 9 PM, with shorter windows in winter. Crowds are lighter than the famous Blue Lagoon, but the pool gets busy on sunny summer afternoons — early morning is quietest. The village itself is small and genuinely historic, with the Icelandic Emigration Center documenting the thousands who left for North America in the 19th century. Budget an hour in the pool and another for the village if that history interests you.
