Hengifoss

The cliff face behind Hengifoss is what makes it unlike any other waterfall in Iceland. Alternating bands of dark basalt and deep rust-red clay run horizontally across the rock — ancient soil horizons from ground exposed between volcanic eruptions, slowly oxidizing over millions of years. The falls themselves drop 128 meters, making Hengifoss one of the tallest in the country, but the striped geology is the thing people remember. The trail starts from a parking area on the south shore of Lake Lagarfljót, about 30 minutes from Egilsstaðir via Route 931. It's 2.5 km each way with roughly 300 meters of elevation gain. About halfway up you pass Litlanesfoss, whose entire bowl is lined with tall geometric basalt columns. Budget two to three hours round trip; proper footwear matters as the upper trail turns muddy. The red clay layers read most vividly in soft overcast light, which East Iceland provides reliably. An early-morning start beats the afternoon tour groups that fill the trail in summer.
