Hellulaug
Westfjords
wikimediaHellulaug sits right beside Route 60 in the Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve — a small stone-walled pool at the rocky shore with the fjord stretching out just meters away. The water hovers around 38–40°C year-round and holds maybe eight to ten people. There are no facilities: no changing rooms, no café, no staff. Just a short path from a roadside parking area and a view across the water to dark mountains. The spring is about 1.5 km west of Flókalundur. Dynjandi waterfall is roughly 36 km north, about 30 minutes up Route 60, so the two fit naturally into the same day. Because the Westfjords see far fewer visitors than the south or north of Iceland, this pool stays quiet even in July — a genuine contrast to the crowded commercial pools elsewhere. Getting here from Reykjavík takes roughly four to five hours of driving, so most visitors are staying overnight in the Westfjords or treating this as part of a longer regional loop. Bring a towel and swimsuit; no other preparation is needed.
