The 2.5-kilometre coastal trail between Hellnar and Arnarstapi is the most rewarding short walk on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The path stays low along the lava shoreline, passing basalt columns, sea arches including the photogenic Gatklettur arch, and blowholes where Atlantic swells surge into fissures. Kittiwakes, fulmars, and Arctic terns nest on the cliffs from June through August. The walk takes 45 to 60 minutes one way on mostly flat, occasionally rocky ground; avoid it in icy conditions. Hellnar is the quieter end to start from. The Fjöruhúsið café — a family-run place above the cove — serves fish soup with homemade bread and operates roughly Easter through late October. The sea cave Baðstofa, reachable at low tide, catches reflected light off the water in shifting colours. Hellnar is reached via a short turn off Road 574 on the south side of the peninsula. Parking is free at both ends, so you can walk one way and double back or arrange a car shuffle. Snæfellsjökull glacier rises to the north and is visible on clear days.
