Strokkur is the real show here — every five to ten minutes it builds a blue dome of water, then throws a column roughly 20 meters into the air before collapsing back into the vent. The Great Geysir, which gave the world the word "geyser," sits nearby but is mostly dormant now. The whole valley entered the historical record in 1294 when earthquakes created new hot springs across the area. Beyond the two famous features, the valley has boardwalk paths linking bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and colour-stained spring pools. The 3-square-kilometre geothermal field is free to enter and open year-round. Stay firmly on the marked paths; the crust around hot springs can be thin and the water beneath is boiling. Haukadalur sits about 90 minutes from Reykjavík on Route 36, and is almost always paired with Þingvellir and Gullfoss as the classic Golden Circle day trip. The on-site Geysir Center has a café, restaurant, hotel, and a geothermal exhibition. Strokkur erupts reliably day and night, so an early morning or evening visit beats the midday coach traffic.
