The 75-meter tower of Hallgrímskirkja is visible from almost anywhere in Reykjavík. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson modeled the church's stepped concrete wings on Iceland's columnar basalt formations — the same rock shapes you see at Svartifoss. Construction ran from 1945 to 1986, and Samúelsson died before it was finished. The result divides people, though it has become the city's defining silhouette. An elevator runs to the observation deck near the top, giving a genuine panorama over Reykjavík toward the harbor and mountains — on a clear day Snæfellsjökull is visible to the northwest. The tower charges a separate admission fee (around 1,400 ISK for adults). The church itself is free: spare white interior, minimal ornament, and a large pipe organ with more than 5,000 pipes installed in the 1990s. Organ recitals run regularly and are worth catching if one lines up. Out front stands a statue of Leif Erikson, a gift from the United States in 1930. The church sits at the top of Skólavörðustígur, a ten-minute uphill walk from the main shopping street.
