Goðafoss East Bank photoM1i2e3

Most visitors to Goðafoss stop on the west bank and call it done, but the east bank gives you a different and often better experience. A separate parking area sits on the east side of the Ring Road bridge, and a short path leads down toward the water, getting you closer to the falls than anything on the west side allows. From here you see the basalt columns on the opposite bank framed behind the cascade, and the horseshoe shape of the falls wraps around you rather than sitting flat ahead. Morning light works well on this side — afternoon sun comes from the west and can backlight the falls. In high flow, spray reaches the path, so expect to get damp if you go close. The east bank parking area is smaller and fills up less quickly than the main west-side lot, which coaches tend to occupy. Both banks are open year-round, free to visit, and linked by a short loop trail if you prefer to walk between them rather than drive. A full visit to both sides takes around an hour at an easy pace.
