The Skjálfandafljót river drops 12 meters over a horseshoe-shaped ledge about 30 meters wide — one of northern Iceland's most accessible waterfalls, right beside the Ring Road between Akureyri and Mývatn, roughly 45 minutes from either. No hiking required, no entrance fee, paved paths on both banks. The west bank gives you the classic frontal view of the full width. The east bank is worth the short drive over the bridge: a path drops closer to the waterline, basalt columns appear across the river, and the spray is heavier. A loop trail of around 3 km connects both sides if you want to walk the full circuit rather than drive. The name means "Waterfall of the Gods," tied to the story of lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði throwing his Norse idol statues into the falls when Iceland converted to Christianity around 1000 AD. Historians note this detail doesn't appear in the earliest sources and was likely added centuries later, but the name stuck. The falls look particularly dramatic in winter when ice builds along the edges, and they are open and free at any hour year-round.
