The Rauðá river enters a narrow lava gorge in Þjórsárdalur and fans into dozens of small streams that spill over dark basalt ledges into clear pools, creating a dense network of cascades that looks nothing like the open highland landscape a few minutes' walk away. The gorge is carpeted in moss and low flowering plants, and the valley sides block the wind — giving it an unusually sheltered, lush quality for this part of Iceland's interior. Getting there requires a 4x4. From Route 32, turn onto the gravel Road 327, which can be rough and deeply rutted after rain. The walk into the gorge from the parking area is easy and flat; allow an hour to explore the canyon channels properly. The nearby Stöng archaeological site — a Viking-era longhouse buried by a volcanic eruption around 1104 — makes a logical pairing on the same trip. Gjáin is about two hours from Reykjavík via Routes 30 and 32, and Háifoss, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, lies close enough to combine in a day. Summer is the best time to visit: vegetation peaks from June through August and the access road is most reliably passable. There is no entrance fee.
