Folaldafoss
East Iceland
wikimediaFolaldafoss sits along Road 939, the Öxi Pass, a steep gravel mountain road that cuts through eastern Iceland between the Ring Road and the valley above Berufjörður. The falls drop around 20 meters where the Berufjarðará river squeezes through a narrow gap and tumbles into a rocky bowl, with a clear pool forming at the base. It's one of the lower waterfalls along a river that produces many falls in quick succession heading up the same valley. The Öxi Pass is an unpaved road and quite steep in places — a regular 2WD car can manage it in dry summer conditions, but the road tends to be rough or muddy outside of June through August, and it's worth checking road.is before turning off the Ring Road. The waterfall is visible and easily reached from the roadside, with a short walk of just a few minutes on flat ground. East Iceland sees a fraction of the tourist traffic of the south, so this is a peaceful stop. Djúpivogur, the nearest town, is about 24 km south along the coast. Spring snowmelt brings the highest flow.
