Fjallsárlón Icebergs
South
wikimediaFjallsárlón sits about 10 kilometers west of Jökulsárlón on the Ring Road, and while it draws far fewer visitors, the glacier views are more immediate: the lagoon lies right at the foot of Fjallsjökull, an outlet of Vatnajökull, so the snout looms close and icebergs are freshly calved just in front of you. The lagoon falls inside Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Zodiac boat tours run from April through October, lasting around 30 to 40 minutes among the ice. Getting close to a several-meter block of glacial ice from a small inflatable is a different experience from watching from the bank — you can see dark tephra bands running through it. Outside of tour season the view from shore is free and rarely crowded. On-site there is parking, a café, and a restaurant. The drive from Reykjavík is around four to five hours east on Route 1. No admission fee applies to the lagoon itself, and the proximity to the glacier face makes it a worthwhile stop even if you plan to visit Jökulsárlón the same day.
