Fagrifoss
Highlands
wikimediaFagrifoss drops around 80 meters through a basalt column canyon on the Geirlandsá river in the South Iceland highlands near the Lakagígar craters. Getting there requires road F206 north from Kirkjubæjarklaustur — an F-road with river fords that are impassable without a proper 4x4. The falls sit about 24 km from Kirkjubæjarklaustur along this track. The road is only reliably open in July and August. The payoff is a falls that sees a fraction of the visitors that South Coast stops attract. The basalt columns flanking the drop are well-formed, and the canyon gives the water a confined energy before it spills below. The name means simply Beautiful Waterfall — understated even by Icelandic standards. Check road conditions at road.is before setting out, carry sufficient fuel, and do not attempt the river crossings if water looks high. Most visitors combine the stop with the Lakagígar craters further up the same road, which makes for a full highland day trip.
